I met a young Maasai man named Bariki in Tanzania. He traveled to the market with us on the day I bought the drum pictured above. Wanting it to be properly broken in, I asked him if he would sing us a traditional song and play the drum, which he happily agreed to on the bus back to Kiaboni.
Now it sits next to my fireplace collecting dust along with the memory. It’s been one year since I’ve been to Africa, and my plan is to return in 2011 to make good on some promises. These I won’t go into at this time, but the future is looking interesting for sure.

Nice DoF, good shot! Now, are you going to take up drumming?
You don’t want that to happen. Trust me.
Hi,
I came upon your blog through a tag search thing…
I love music and was wondering is it a Djembe drum? Can’t see the base, so it could be a Dun Dun…?
Music geek in the building 🙂
Hello,
Thanks for the question! This challenged me to look it up and find out for myself. And…I found out it’s a Djembe drum. 🙂
Sweeeet! Thanks for that
